Default Did you 'prepare' your house before packing began??

    Hi all,

We have Pickfords coming on Monday to start packing the House.

What did you do do before they came to get stuff ready for them, accepting that boots etc have already been cleaned??

We are attacking the loft today, which could prove to be a recipe for divorce!

Only a few more days in blighty before the big adventure begins

The packers have a well-practised system for packing the whole contents of a house, and that means EVERYTHING - they're not into sorting or using judgement about it. So it's up to you to make sure they don't pack e.g. the cooking gear you were intending to use for the next three days, your travel bags and documents, or bags of rubbish you were meaning to take to the dump (and yes, all these have happened).

If you can, put aside a room as a 'no go' area, where you keep things that are NOT to be packed (or not until the very end of the process). Failing that, label things that are to be left, talk your thinking through with the packing team, and keep a beady eye on what is happening all the time.

thats what we did... concentrated on the stuff not to pack and let them pack everything else.. you pay for the container so who cares if theres junk in there

We had several 'major' clear-outs before the packers arrived, we hoard stuff for some strange reason - that in itself was a laugh and a half

We then had one room that had all our stuff that was coming with us in luggage which was a bit of a trauma for the ever indecisive young children and their toys.... My advice would be to be brutal we shipped boxes of tat still and I have no earthly idea why

    Hi
    I echo what pebbles16 said
But just to add make sure u keep aside all important paper work as when Pickfords was packing up our house 3 boxes from the end my husband said do I know where his drivers liecence was and we both knew it had been packed luckily the Pickfords man remembered where he put paperwork in so it was not to difficult to locate but that was close
also if u r keeping coffee/tea mugs out for use remember to keep some out for the packers

    Thanks folks.

    Great tips here, so thanks!

Did you all have to empty your lofts or did they do that for you as well?

We are rationalising this area today and so far it's going well, but we are not sure if we need to empty the contents into a spare room ready for the actual packing or leave it up there for them to empty??

Also, what did you do with all of the bits and pieces left out once the house was empty and you were about to leave?

If the bits and pieces have any use in them, give them to a friend/relative/charity shop. If they haven't, stick them in the bin. Depending on size of stuff, you can swing by at the last minute yourself, or you could leave a key with a trusted person so they can go and fetch things after you've gone. This last could include supervising the visit of a house-clearance person, if your bits and pieces include furniture - lots of firms, or charities, will take things (to sell on second-hand, or dump as appropriate) without charging you, as their profit pays them, but you'd need to phone round and organize this.

Ah, just thought - maybe you mean bits and pieces that you need to use till the last minute, but you want to take with you. If that's the case, you'll have to plan to have enough space/weight allowance available for them in your hold luggage or hand luggage, so you can pop them in at the last minute.

Did you check with the removal company?

In our case they said that they would not go into the loft (this may depend on how accessible your loft is?).

So we had to get everything out of the loft that we wanted them to pack.

I think that every removal company we had stated that the loft must be cleared, so I would check your quote.

Ditto what everyone else says about putting things you are taking with you in a small room. Also if you have time, try a test pack of the weight of all you are taking with you. We didn't have time for this and consequently had to pay quite a bit extra for air freight.
