Don't quote me but I think it is for the most part free.
If you are eligible for free healthcare in NZ it should be largely free. You my have to pay a surcharge on your ultrasound scans depending on the radiology service provider and for antenatal classes. If you use a private hospital/obstetrician there may be a fee also.
In general in NZ you choose a lead maternity caregiver who is most often a midwife, but can be a GP with an interest in obstetrics or a hospital obstetrician and who is responsible for organising care.

oh wow..
where i come from, even a citizen has to pay. the whole process from 1st trimester to the delivering of the baby inclusive of hospitalisation will cost up to NZ$8,000.
Thanks for the replies thus far
I would highly recommend going private care with a specialist. We paid $3000 with ours and glad we done so. I've heard horror stories with the public gov't (free) way that it was not worthwhile to take the risk. (not to say there's anything bad with the public system).
Quietly adding here that we will always be eternally grateful to the (public, free) Waitakere Hospital that saved both our d-i-l and grandson, in a situation that required an emergency Caesarean. Expert care, specialist gynaecologist and paediatrician called in as necessary.
Hi,
Are there differences in charges for the midwifery services ? I'm about to contact a midwife, which details was given to me by my GP. Or should I go to those midwives attached to a maternity hospital, like in Greenlane ?
Midwife led care is free. If you need a gynaecologist it will also be covered as long as you have a 2 year work permit or PR. If you want a gynaecologist then you have the option of 'topping up' the free care. So you are still treated in the same hospital and have the same nurses etc but have a private Dr.
We did this and it was money well spent as I was terrified of the whole prospect. We paid $4000 which gets you a 'package' of antenatal care, delivery (c section or normal) and post natal care. We used Origins of Auckland and they were fab. My Dr was called Paul Robinson. Not many people have their child delivered by a TV villain! I had a breech baby so the private care mean't I was scanned frequently and had time to get used to the prospect of a C section. I then spent a week in Auckland hospital with the most view of the volcano. I'll never forget watching the sunrise with DD.
I can't fault the care I had here in NZ.
There are lots of threads on birth in NZ- try searching midwife or birth.
We had a midwife as our LMC and were more than happy with her. A planned home birth didn't happen due to complications where we transferred to hospital and eventually Lindsay had to have an emergency C-section, so we saw a lot of different aspects. Pre and post natal care from the midwife and the hospital staff was near faultless. Even though he took 3 years to arrive we are always thankful that we were able to have him here in NZ rather than in America. In America they tend to see pregnancy as a medical condition. Doctors don't always need to be involved. Do research, talk to people and find the best fit for you.
5 months down the line now we have a happy, healthy baby boy. How he got here seems quite irrelevant now.
