helpful tip - ex pat shield

I saw another thread based on the US version of this. Like many of you we are missing a few and only a few of the TV shows we used to watch in the UK, but as we don't have a UK IP address anymore we can't access them. If you google search ex pat shield and download the software [this is free], it gives you a UK IP address and you can then watch bbc i-player, itv, channel 4 and five on demand just like you would of. We have found it really helpful for sport in particular and we enjoyed watching the f1 last night for the first time since we have arrived with the old BBC crew!

We have found at times that there can be a little delay due to the distance but the quality is really good due to the faster speeds we are getting here compared to where we were in the UK.

Just thinking of access to Trade Me!! Can only access it on an NZ IP.
Or can you switch between them?

all you need to do is use a proxy

there are lots of free proxies out there. just do a google search and find a proxy for the country you need (UK or US or there are proxies in China if you need)
You go to the proxy page and there is an address bar (like at the top of your browser) and you type in the site in the UK or US that you want to access and VOILA!! You have local access.

When you close that browser wiindow (to the proxy site) you are back to normal. No need to download or run any software at all.

Not all proxies are created equal however. Some are faster and some are slower so you may want to try several.

When using these services or programs, be very careful about what you are sending across the network. Proxy servers, particularly free ones, are often setup to collect personal data and collate data on your surfing habits. The nasty ones could capture more sensitive data by utilising man-in-the-middle attacks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-in-the-middle_attack). You're essentially surfing the web through a middleman, so be very careful what you are sending across to that middleman.

A slightly more trustworthy way to gain a foreign IP address is to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). If you go with a well-established provider there is lesser chance that that company is engaged in rouge activities. Unfortunately well-established providers tend to charge quite a bit for that service.

we've had no problems accessing trade me or using it but we switch the shield on and off so we are only using it to access TV programs as like in a previous thread we had heard that some, although ex pat shield was not mentioned, can collect stuff from your computer, but switching it on and off is easy enough to do. Pleased people have found something which means they can access TV from the UK again.

We have setup an proxy and have no problems watching TV on iplayer, but be cautious with the amount of broadband width it gobbles up.......in the UK you get used to having unlimited download, but here its not the same, our first couple of weeks with the proxy we watched about 1 hour every couple of nights, and nearly used 5GB.

Excellent find, also for those living in the Netherlands It's a bit silly here: we can watch BBC 1-2-3-4 on cable tv, but no iplayer...
