    Default Geotechnical Engineer queries

    Hi All,

I was wondering if there were any Civil or Geotechnical Engineers out there. I would be keen to know how work compares to the UK - working hours, salaries, culture etc.

I have around 12 years experience and have been told by recruitment consultants that there's plenty of work. We are looking a Christchurch or Auckland probably.

    Thanks for you help.

    PD

If you make 5 posts then you can make and receive Provate Messages. So post once more. You may find that some people would feel more comfortable posting some specifics in a private message.

However, in general, as a geotech then you'll still have a load to learn of course, teh UK doesn't have so many earthquakes. So the geotech is way more important to everything over here. I'm a civil specicialising in transportation, and work closely with the geo-tech guys and girls. Hours are what they are. Contractual hours will almost certainly be 40. As in the uk, the reality may differ slightly, and as with all civil works then there's peals and troughs.
I'd not limit yourself to just Auckland and ChCh if it's your job that you are concerned about, there are several other places with busy geo-tech teams. Of course you may also have other reasons for naming those, but the nature of your work means that you'll be in demand countrywide.

Culture is an interesting one, as just like in the UK it will vary company to comany, even office to office. Some people on this forum have struggled to adapt over here, or found some negative working environments. For me it's been the opposite, only worked with one company but find them way ahead of anything in the UK in terms of professionalism, support to staff, for both work and play, and investment in up-skilling.

Thanks Duncan. This can be my 5th post.

Good to know that there are jobs available all over NZ.

Hi, I am a Civil and Structural Engineer; however I have never worked in UK but in Central Europe.

As Duncan said: Why limit to those locations?

    All the best!
