    Default MAF inspection bill

We've received the invoice from the removal company for the MAF inspection. They are looking at 19 boxes (cos the UK removal company didn't bother writing what was inside them) and a generator and for the privilege can you give us $445 - thanks very much!!!

Yup - tip to all - when the packers pack, make sure it doesn't say "Misc" or the like on ANY box...otherwise it will be opened!

Is this a MAF invoice or from your movers? If MAF is it to be paid direct to them or your movers?

The bit about not using 'assorted' or 'misc' is on the Declaration form. Poor form by the packers really.

It seems our stuff was cleared half on Wednesday, rest of it was supposed to be inspected on Friday but haven't received any more information so far....Our local clearing agent is Allied movers. Just to cross check, is there a way to check what MAF actually charges than blindly going by what agent quotes?

Hot off the oven!!! We have been advised to get some of wooden artifacts treated ($190) plus some feathery stuff which needs treatment ($130)...so that's $320 evaporated from my pocket.

We were invoiced by the company here in NZ for MAF inspection charges whilst the container was still at sea. We actually spoke to MAF who then told us the container had been cleared and they were not going to be inspecting anything. We then contacted the original removal company in the UK who got in touch with the company in NZ and the result was that the "MAF charges" were no longer necessary. So, yes, you can phone MAF with your container number and find out exactly what they are going to be charging. We just got the number from the MAF website.

Gah, well done for questioning it.

It all seemed too clear-cut somehow, and they couldn't tell us the precise details. Too many round numbers in the bill! But otherwise the removal company here were fantastic and worked so very hard.
