import a dog from Oz??

Is it easy and straightforward to import an Australian dog into NZ?

Specifically, can I purchase a puppy in Oz and just fly it over or does it have to go through the importation song and dance??

What are the importation requirements?

I did try to google it, I promise! But my eyes glazed over and thought I would just ask here as someone would know the answer easily, I hope.

I think the answer is yes they can be imported but you have to do a bunch of vet things???

Does anyone know the costs of all this????

Hi Grumpy,

We brought our 5 year old Maltese x shihitzu to Christchurch, using Jet pets..

We had to show a certificate stating he had his yearly vaccinations within the last six months..then a vet from the company came to our house to give another shot and a blood test..

They picked him up, put him on the plane, boarded him for a day and picked him up the day after we arrived!

It's pretty straight forward between Australia and New Zealand..

It cost us around $1200 Australian, and back to Oz around $1200 NZD..

that is about what the dog in NZ costs.

So importing one will easily double the cost of my dog!

A standard poodle.

I want to show it (maybe) and might breed it once (purely for the puppies!!! We LOVE puppies!!)

OH is the driving force behind this plan. His mother breeds and shows Dobermans but I have always had oodles of poodles in my family.

Before we were married, he didn't really care for dogs (from childhood experience) but was easily overcome with affection for the AWESOME POODLE!!! And now is the one insisting that we try our hand at showing dogs. I have a tiny bit of experience showing horses (about a million years ago) so this will be interesting to say the least. I am still too nervous to show the goats!

As if we don't have enough going on with animals in our life!

But I am having trouble finding a dog that fits my needs in NZ as I have a certain look I am trying to find. And right now, there are no std poodle puppies that even meet conformation standards for sale in NZ.

This is much harder than I would like!
