    Default Clothing and Shoes!

For those on their way here - just a few things to stock up on if you need to.

Women's gym gear is really hard to find in small sizes i.e. a small here is an English size 12 at least. I'm an 8 and it's impossible to find gym shorts that fit unless they're kids which are too colourful and 'young' looking for me. Also bra sizes - check the conversions out before you come - they don't use the same sizes at all!

Also men's shoes/boots - are not easy to buy here unless you either pay the earth or buy really cheap stuff.

The moral is - stock up on gym/sports clothing for smaller ladies and buy a couple of years worth of good boots/shoes for men.

And ladies if you use lillets, super, super plus or super plus extra pack those as they are "super" hard to come by!

Are you sure? Seems plenty of Super size ones (not sure about super+ or super+extra), it's the slim with applicator that don't seem to be readily available afaik.

Can I ask where you are shopping?

I am a size 8 and have no problem at all buying the equivalent of a UK size 8 here...and I don't wear skimpy bright coloured stuff either. You can get UK size 8 or XS (depending upon the brand) gym shorts, yoga pants or tracksuit bottoms in Rebel Sports, Sterling Sports etc. Places like The Shoe Clinic also have a good range of gym clothing. A size S is more like a UK 10-12, but almost all major brands such as Reebok, Adidas, Nike, Asics etc do an XS or 8. The Warehouse often doesn't stock the smaller sizes, and their sizes often seem more similar to US than UK, i.e. a US 8 is more like a UK10.

As for Bra's, the cup size is the same as a UK/US measurement. The bra size number is replaced with size number: 32 = 10, 34 = 12, 36 = 14 etc. I do find that the sizes in places like bendon are fairly inconsistent these days, and I tend to stick to quality brands such as Bereli, which you will find in Farmers. Also bear in mind that a very large % of women are wearing the wrong size, have no idea how to correctly work out their size and don't seem to realise that even if you are measured up as a particular size, doesn't mean it will fit your particular 'shape' and you may need to wear a different size to fit correctly.

If in doubt, here is one of the best guides i've found:

I agree with you about shoes here....there isn't a particular lack of decent shoes here, but most shops sell predominantly cheaply made poorer quality footwear. If you are looking for something more long lasting or better quality, there are plenty of specialist footwear and outdoor shops that have a decent range of stock but you will definitely pay considerably more than you would have in UK.

As I grew up barefoot in NZ, my foot is wider than the average American foot. I have a hard time buying sandals in the U.S but find that most Kiwi sandals fit me. So if you have a narrow foot, you may find some Kiwi footware too wide.

Tried every clothing and sports store in the Hutt Valley and online - nothing doing in my size oh except shiny 70s footy shorts - resorted to buying from the UK online Family.

I should also have added that mens jeans are a bit awkward for not so tall men i.e. they don't do different lengths here, just a one size fits all, unless you buy Levis at $100 a go - which is fine unless you are using them for scruffs/working which my husband is.

I was told by one shop assistant that NZ'ers think it's easier to take jeans up rather than lengthen them!

If anyone knows of any shops in the Wellington area that do different lengths (apart from Levis) - please let me know.

The Hutt is the easiest place to find smaller clothes my husband is only 5ft 4 and found everything other than Jeans, which he sourced from M & S he is a UK 6 size shoe which he struggled in the UK but not in NZ as stores cater for the Asia market and lots of Asin men and women are smaller. For gym clothes we always went to Dress Mart as there was a huge variety often lots of choice at either end of the scale.
incidently I am only 5ft 7 and struggle to find the right length of Jeans too so I think the answer is right that people either turn them up or wear shorts!!!!!

It's not just mens jeans - it's one size fits all for all trousers here for men and women! The alteration people charge approx $20 to shorten a pair of standard trousers (called pants here!) - not sure how much they charge to shorten jeans.
