    Default Immigration Companies....

I have been quoted around £4000 for an immigration compnmay to deal with all the necessary application process. This includes, i am told, assisting with al the application and applying for jobs and speaking with prosepctive employees. These employess are not fully aware with all the immigration rules and are not 'immigration friendly' and therefore get jittery about speaking with people like myself and my wife regarding any applications as they may fall foul of the system in NZ.

My question is - what knowledge do any of you have regarding these issues or what experiances have you had when applying, accepting and then taking jobs in order to obtain residency whilst still in the UK. What are your thoughts of the above remarks?

I want to start applying and get my wife to do the same, who has more points than I due to her higher qulaifications. Any thoughts?

Read back. I can't remember seeing anyone who actually found the immigration adviser as helping get a job. Depends what you do, but for us (as applicants and now as prospective employers) then getting the PR application in before application is a good sign, especially at the moment there's a raft of applicants from the Uk who are out of work and scattergunning the world for a job. No real interest in NZ just another target and most over here don't see that as a good long term prospect. A submitted PR application shows comitment to NZ.

Use contacts. It's all about contacts. OH got 2 offers out of 2 applications from the UK, both at the right salary level. Both were through contacts (one being me, the other being an friend of a friend of a friend of an old employer). See the thread on who to talk to about jobs - different sectors listed from forumites on here.

If applying for PR in your name gets less than 140 points then consider if your wife being the principal and you been the 'partner' is a more appropriate way to go with your application.

Hi, we used an immigration company for our paperwork which we found a great help, yes we could probably have done it ourselves but with 2 very young children and the fact we needed a job offer to get PR we decided to go down this route.

We also used the Job Search side of the same company where we paid £995 to sign up for this service plus 15% of first years salary if they secure you a job. They sent out my husbands CV (re-done by them for NZ market with someone elses name all over it and some of their skills included) along with an information pack basically advising potential employers that our paperwork was all good to go for PR once he got a job offer.
We were not impressed at all with this service. My hubby ended up finding jobs on Seek and Trademe which he forwarded onto the Job Search company for them to make contact - he was basically doing their job for them.

As it turns out he did all the work himself to secure his current job in NZ as the organisation would not deal with agencies/job search companies, BUT we still had to pay 12.5% of his first years wage to this company (they had a clause in their small print which stated they would not compete in finding a job but we managed to negotiate down from 15% as their service was terrible - we still believe we should have paid nothing but they started getting their solicitors involved).

What I am trying to say is that we wish we had never used the Job Search side of the company as they took a lot of money off us for not a lot in return (more of a hinder than a help with all their errors etc). We used them because we were taking a very big risk selling up and moving over here without a job offer or PR so wanted to maximize our opportunities, but in hindsight all we needed was access to Seek and Trademe.

Would we feel the same if they had secured him a job though?

    Hope our experience helps others.

    Cheers
    Emma

I'll second Duncan on this. I haven't come across any Immigration advisors helping out in getting job offers (haven't checked any of them recently). I got job offer by applying directly to my current employer . As Duncan said, using contacts will constitute 90% of your job search. This thread has my story if that helps!

    All the best.
