I'd be more concerned about tsunamis than earthquakes, and not just in New Zealand. Earthquakes seem to be more survivable than tsunamis. I'd head for a well-constructed, lightly roofed bungalow, in an inland area, high enough up to be safe from tsunamis.

I figure that up 164m of rocky hill with a view of the Pacific is good enough...though I should have a better water supply.

Seriously though, if earthquakes worry you once you have read the literature and looked at the buildings and safety aspects then NZ is not the place to be. Yes, we were lucky in Christchuch and there could have been injuries and deaths. But damage was minimal when compared to other places and situations. Everywhere has its risks. You take your choice of what is acceptable to you.

I know your answer is a humorous one Duncan, but I'm not sure why I'll die from pneumonia.

As above. Slightly tongue in cheek, but the house you describe would be the exact one that most migrants complain about My point being that we'll all die of something. And whilst we could minimise the risk of that being as a result of an earthquake, then there's a chance that we end up increasing some other risk, possibly above the rate that the earthquake presented in the first place.
