Anyone experience in driving from south island to north island?

Does anyone have experience when driving from south island to north island?. I'm planning to move to north island (wellington) and thinking to driving to Wellington from Christchurch. Can someone please advise me how-to, which route, etc?

There are not many other options than SH1 are there?!

So from which city I should take the ferry? and idea the cost?

Unless you go down the West Coast and then back over to the East Coast again, which I wouldn't recommend, there's just SH1. And - of course, there's the ferry. If $$ is an option, I think it's cheaper at night - but it would be a shame to miss coming into the sounds. It's really pretty.

That will depend on the criteria you personally set.

One might be the price, another times of travel; of course you might like at first checking on their availability.
