Default Help us choose a location!

    Hi All,

We're hoping to move out to NZ from the UK sometime at the end of this year. We're extremely flexible about locations, and as such, haven't a clue where to start!

    These are the criteria that need to be met;

    1. An hour or so from both mountains for skiing and the sea.
    2. Opportunity for work (one manufacturing engineer and one teacher.)
    3. A big enough town that there's plenty going on.
    4. A small enough town that we'll potentially work near each other and will only need one car.

Is this too much to ask? Can you suggest anywhere we'd like?

Thanks in advance for the help,

    David and Laura

On the North Island, you might be able to find work in Hamilton, Palmy North or New Plymouth - although the last one is probably the only one that meets the 1 hour to the mountain criteria!

Obviously as a teacher, you can work anywhere. It's finding somewhere with a big enough manufacturing opportunity for your OH

Maybe Hawkes Bay could be the answer think you can ski near there, there are a number of food processing factories ( & they are ever expanding)who would require maintenance engineers possibly.
    Other requirements could be met
    Sea
    Teaching opportunities
    Small friendly place
Has quite a vibrant feel to it.

    Do some research.

Central North Island has skiing, as do the Southern Alps, but the temperatures of the towns around them will vary quite a lot. Towns down in Otago would be close to skiing and ocean. The ocean can be so beautiful in some parts of NZ that you may decide to give up the snow skiing and just move to surfing.

I think the weather on the east coast of the North Island would be a draw. Napier or that area? We visited once and thought it was a lovely town. Hamilton hasn't much appeal to me, but I imagine towns near there are more cute.

Any chance of a reccie trip?

Problem here is the one hour distance to both sea and snow combined with jobs in the given sectors.

However I probably would support moving closer to the sea as that it is available all year around. Based on the job requirement especially manufacturing engineer I could imagine that you might find something here in our small city.

In the south, probably either Christchurch (1hr to Mt Hutt) or Invercargill (2hrs to Remarkables) but has non-ski mountain much closer.

Many thanks for the replies so far! We're happily googling away now finding out more about all the places suggested!
