Tsunami warning for NZ, due in Marianas
    Updated 3 minutes ago
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has now officially included New Zealand in its tsunami warning after a massive earthquake off Japan.
In the northern Marianas in the northwestern Pacific people have been warned about 9pm NZT that a tsunami could strike within the hour, Radio New Zealand International's correspondent reports.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has also included Nauru, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Tokelau, Samoa, American Samoa, Australia, Fiji, New Caledonia, Tonga, Pitcairn and Antarctica.
New Zealand Civil Defence is advising coastal communities here that a tsunami is possible following the magnitude 8.9 earthquake off Japan at 6:46 (NZT) on Friday.
The Civil Defence Ministry say it is assessing the severity of the possible threat to New Zealand.
For more information, tune into Radio New Zealand National, Radio New Zealand Concert or Radio New Zealand International for updates every 15 minutes.
The Emergency Management National Controller says if a tsunami has been generated, the arrival times in New Zealand have yet to be advised.
The first wave may arrive later and may not be the largest. Waves may continue for several hours.
If a tsunami has been generated people in coastal areas should:
    1. Stay off beaches
    2. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)
    3. Do not go sightseeing
    4. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
    5. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates
    6. Follow instructions of your local Civil Defence authorities.
This warning has been issued to all local civil defence authorities, emergency services, other agencies, Radio New Zealand and other media.
Local civil defence authorities have been asked to activate local response arrangements and alert potentially at-risk communities as appropriate.

Ralf - Pacific Tsunami centre HAS included NZ in the warning, as 'potential tsunami' but not given a time or level as of yet. Orignially it didn't include NZ, now does.

    From the civil defence website
"#JapanTsunami potential threat to NZ update1

    2000, 11 March, 2011

A tsunami potential threat advisory is in effect for New Zealand:
The advisory will remain in effect until it is upgraded to a national warning or a cancellation message is issued by the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM).

An earthquake of magnitude 8.8 has occured in Japan causing signifcant local damage.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) has issued a Tsunami Watch - in response to the above earthquake.

Only messages issued by MCDEM represent the official warning status for New Zealand. Local civil defence authorities may supplement these messages by applying local threat assessments.

A tsunami is possible. MCDEM and scientific advisors are assessing the severity of the threat to New Zealand.

    People in coastal areas should:

MCDEM and scientific advisors are closely monitoring the situation to determine whether a tsunami has been generated and to assess the severity of the threat to New Zealand. More information about this event will follow.

    Exclamation

On TV, Coetzee from our Civil Defence: Advisory issued, not a warning; no threat however updates by the hour following continuous assessment.

Potential areas currently Northland west and East coast perhaps down to BOP.

People not to be alarmed but alert.
