    Default Another car question

    Hi all.
This might have been covered before so apologies if it has.

I have a 2009 Subaru Outback which I am considering shipping to Nelson.
Done all the sums and it seems to add up ok.

Question is What do I do about changing the cars speedo/odometer to one that reads in KM's ? Is this a requirement and if so does anyone have an idea of the cost?

ps - tried several NZ Subaru agents and got no reply :-(

You might check with NZTA as the official body.

Else with WoF providers like VINZ etc.

    Thanks.
Checked NZTA website but it makes no mention of what units the sppedo reads - Just says it must work

Search back, there's an email address for a guy at the AA that answers all these questions. Bugging me that I can't remember his name, but it's something odd like Waldo/Wally.

We brought our car over a year ago and didn't need to do that. Does the speedometer now already indicate both miles and kilometres?

Our Landrover is still in miles, never got changed. Km's are on the dial for info. We have a diesel so we initially thought there would be a problem with the purchase of the Road User Charge (RUC), but that was converted automatically into miles, so no problem at all. We buy RUC's by the km, but the paperwork is issued in miles.

Wally Gee is THE man (at the AA) for ANY questions about importing a vehicle - fabulous chap. Email add: WGee@aa.co.nz

We got our car shipped over from the UK, was completely painless. Shippers dropped it off at the AA and they sorted everything. The only thing we had to do was fit the NZ number plates (harder than you would think).

No Change is required. If a diesel vehicle you just have to remember when you purchase road user charges to get them to change to miles. Can be a bit difficult to start off with reading the speedometer, but you soon get used to it.
