    Hi All !
    I'm Civil Engineer .
Plan to arrive next month and to start looking for the job .
My question is, how essential is registration with professional body, such as IPENZ for job hunting ?

I understand that in order to work in my industry I don't have to assess my diploma and to get license as long as I'm not undersigning construction design.

    Thanks for info sharing !

Just the registration won't help you. It is about becoming approved as CPEng.

It is not only a PS1 (Design) that requires to be CPEng for being eligible to sign it. There are further documents and tasks where it is either mandatory or at least desirable.

BTW: You don't assess your diplomas but they will be assessed by IPENZ.

Also IPENZ does not license you but DBH are introducing a licensing scheme for builders and designers.

    Hi ralf
I would be able to cross credit using my APEC registration but I understand I will get MIPENZ..... not chartered....is MIPENZ any good for hunting for a job?
I know that if in UK if I am MIET, I can register with the EC as a CEng even if I never step a foot in the UK
    Funny isn't it?

I am not sure if it really helps. It is not asked for in job ads. It might help because it can be interpreted as showing commitment towards NZ. So I would think that it is not an indicator for something professional but rather personal.

I do not know about UK but I know that in Australia there is something like that possible too.

    Two difficult questions!

    1. You did not read the bit of information I put in my profile, did you? Here in NZ I call myself 'civil and structural'; civil not in the meaning of roading or infrastructure. In my degree from Europe it reads 'construction'.

    2. Generally not the best, like all over the world. And the influence of theChch earthquakes remains to be evaluated. Check our IPENZ website and those of Seek, newspapers and job agencies.

    Hi !
You are right ! I was so excited to find "brother in arm" that forgot to check your profile
I'm probably 100% civil engineer as my expertise is roads , railways and infrastructure .
I have been looking for the jobs during last year and only recently started to get some spark of interest in my cv. May be because I already ave Visa and arrival date and may be because of market improvement, probably both of these.

Is there any particular recruitment agency specializing in civil engineers ?
My short experience shows that agents are trying to help (me or themselves ) but are clueless in technical matters so can't properly present me to potential employer.

NZ is a small place, so in terms of consultancies that do significant roading, rail and infrastructure schemes then that's a very small number of places. It's not hard to get that list together and approach those companies directly and that gives you the chance to present yourself in the bet way.

Be aware that IPENZ also has some subgroups focussing on other technical areas, including the IPENZ Transportation Group for example. You don't need to be a full memer of IPENZ to join those groups, and that may be a route to finding out more about the industry.

Overall I'd suggest that the market in general is going to be pretty flat in NZ this year, with the growth later on in ChCh offset by a reduction in work in other areas as the funding is diverted south. Clearly some skills are going to be needed more than others in response to that.

However, there's also one very significant road/tunnel scheme up in Akl that will require some specific resources too. Overall I'd guess the market isn't as bad as in some places (UK for example), but it's not a market where the average candidate can expect 4 offers in a week.

    That's fine.

There are no agencies specialised in civil engineering. There are a few which are quite competent generally. You will find their names when you look on job ads.

As Duncan wrote there are also too many consultancies at all here dealing with major civil engineering.

    Good luck!

    Minor edit for clarity.
