    Default when to buy flights??

Have been keeping an eye on flight prices over the last few months....haven't applied for eoi yet as looking to leave around August 2013.

However, have noticed that flights (one way) bought in advance are about £860 (Qantas) but a couple of months before leaving brings them down to £707 (via Singapore stopover for 2 weeks).

Has anyone left buying their flights until a couple of months before departure or do you all buy them as soon as possible??

There will be 4 of us so would save almost £640 at present prices!

    Any advice??

    hi there

booking flights is like invest in share market

you never know when they will increase or drop the prices

from my own experience, i booked one day before the departure and got pricing equivalent to booking it 3 to 4 months in advance - this one is lucky as there was last minute cancellation by someone and i got this deal

on other instance, i booked 6 months in advance and when i checked the pricing few weeks before departure the pricing was bit low compared to what i paid 6 months ago ( not much difference but still considerable amount )

i would suggest booking flights for aug 2013 now may not be a good idea.

    my suggestion

    1. finalize which airlines / route you prefer to book ( select min 2 )

    2. then check their website periodically and learn the pricing trends

    3. usually they increase / decrease on certain month

    4. once you have your research done during 2011 - 2012

    5. then book your flight tickets around 4 - 6 months range during 2013

    hope this helps

I've found that it's always good to take advantage of the airline sales, and providing you're not wanting to travel at a peak time (Xmas, school holidays, etc), then a month or two in advance should be sufficient. We bought ours about a month in advance from the Air New Zealand sale and got a great deal.
