Default Leaving the country -visa advice

I've got to go to Vienna for one week with work on May 7th

I have a Resident Visa and a RRV and a stamp marking my entry to NZ on 10th Jan 2011

Do I need to do anything to get back into the country?

I remember reading something on the forum about people having difficulty cos they haven't applied for something?

    much appreciated as ever

You have the returning residents visa which expires when you leave the country but when you come back in the customs people stamp a new one into your passport (smaller rubber stamp visa, rather than another big blue sticker). You don't need to do anything.

    Have a great trip MBK.

Isn't it the other way, that you get the visa stamped on the way OUT, so that it's available for the return. That's the problem with people being overseas when it (time) expires? Either way assuming you're within the 2 year window it shouldn't matter and you don't need to do anything.

No Duncan, they stamp it when you come back.

You seem to be getting confused between the old RRV and permit scheme and the new RV.

With the permit scheme, when you left the country your permit would expire and when you returned to NZ then you would have a new permit stamped in your passport. Your visa however remained valid for two years from activation.

    No permits anymore.

For the OP, the first RV remains valid for 2 years from first activation, so as long as you arrive back in NZ before it expires then no worries.

We're leaving the country for the first time next week. Will let you know of our experience when we return! We have the new RV though, no RRV to speak of!

If you scroll down on here http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra.../residence.htm, you'll see there's a chart with the equivalents of old and new INZ names and systems.
