Not sure if this has been referred to already, but I got some excellent real life responses when I asked a similar question a while ago.

    Default Net...Gross...Confused...

    Hi All,

Now that does seem a bit basic as a first question maybe but I am currently searching what I will need for a living (Auckland)...

What confuses me is the following:
There are many threads out there stating that an average living starts at an household income of 80-90k --- now is that meant to be net income after tax? Same question when reading some posts here stating median household incomes at 80ish k.

Because I have tried out the COL calculator on here, and even when I select the numbers mainly from the frugal/modest columns (except for holidays) and add 450$ rent I am easily in the 80k net bracket.

Not up to open another standard-of-living-debate here... I am fully aware that people have a very different stance on what a good living is.

    Cheers, ZZ

If you want to live in a central Auckland suburb, in a non-minging rental, then I'd expect to pay $750+ for 3 bed. $800+ would be more likely. Auckland is expensive. But great.
