For back up electricity it is possible to wire a 'reverse' socket. We have one in the shed and when our power goes we turn off the supply into the house and turn on the generator. It's only a tiny one, but provides enough power to run the well pump so we don't run out of water and provide a bit of light and maybe the tv if the kids are driving me really nuts.
