return ticket...?

i'm planning to go to Auckland this August...
should I have a return ticket or just buy a one-way ticket ? (as I know it should be an exact date for return)

any comment will be great...

actually, with WTR visa and 9 months to find a job (said on the offering letter)
but as I will go by myself first and my family will go later, I think it would be better if I can buy a one-way ticket

Not sure if that is still the case, but as far as I know it needs to say something along the lines of "outward passage waived' on the visa for you to be able to travel with a one- way ticket.
At least it was like that in 2005, when we came over with a student visa for a year.

when we came through SFO, airlines were so particular about return ticket. But in our WTR visa it was clearly mentioned "no return tickets needed" and they allowed us to travel.

I passed the same path a month ago.
You don't need return ticket but you should present your WTR Visa on check in in the airport.
