Default Certified Copies - for immigration purposes and nursing registration purposes

    Hi all,

I need some advice about certified copies please.

Both for immigration purposes and nursing registration purposes, I am required to provide certified copies of certain documents (passport etc).

My question is: will UK Post Office certified copies suffice (at £7.00 for 3 items) or will I need to sell a kidney to pay a vampire....sorry, solicitor or the like to provide this service at £70.00 an item?

(If this is in the wrong forum, moderators please feel free to move - thank you.)

NZ has JPs (Justices of the Peace) that will be able to help certify them for free (well, they're not allowed to receive payment for JP services).

I'm pretty sure the UK has something similar?

    http://www.immigration.govt.nz/NR/rd...vember2010.pdf provides a definition:

'Certified copies are photocopies that have been stamped or endorsed by a person who confirms that the copy is a true copy of the original. The person who certifies the copy must be authorised to do so by law in your home country or in New Zealand (eg a Justice of the Peace, Notary Public, lawyer or Court official).

In the UK certified copies have to be done by a solicitor or a commissioner for oaths .... and yes they chage £5 a signature. I was lucky, I'm a solictor and a friend at work did it all for free .....

don't know where you got the sum of £70 for .... you might be thingking of a notary public. Just phone a local solicitors office as ask them to confirm it's £5 an item.

Otherwise try phoning your local county court and see if they would be willing to help you.

Not sure where you're living but £70.00 an item?!!!!
I phoned round several local solicitors and the highest quote I received was £5 per item. In the end I went with one that charged me £1 per item - and they did the colour photocopies too (plus handed them back the same day). Personally I was impressed with their service.

    Thanks everyone.

What a relief to hear that we won't have to pay through the nose.

Yes, I think it was a notary public we'd been told charged £70.

I did explore the INZ website but couldn't find what I wanted.

As usual, the best place for advice is right here on the forum

Actually it took me only a couple of minutes.

Please be aware that the link I provided in my earlier post is from INZ.

For nursing registration you find this one http://www.nursingcouncil.org.nz/dow...de-april11.pdf:
'Certified copies: All copies of documents must be certified as true copies of the originals by a solicitor, justice of the peace, notary public or other person authorised to take a statutory declaration.'
