ISO Compliant Microchips for Dog Importing

Just got word from MAF that our dogs have the wrong microchips - off to the vet today we went to get the latest and greatest ones. Apparently the latest ISO chips are 16 digits - so be sure to double check on this if you plan on bringing dogs and they have yet to be microchipped (or have the "old school" chips inserted). They won't issue our permit until they get a letter from our vet verifying the latest chip insertion.

Ask your vet for large animal chips. Those are ISO compliant.
At least that is what they put in my dogs to meet the 134kHz requirement (rather than 125kHz US standard).
In case anyone is wondering it's mainly the US that has this issue because some daft company copyrighted the 125kHz chips and made them the 'standard' in the US rather than the International (the I in ISO) standard of 134kHz. That's the abridged version of the stupid story anyhow.

We checked with an international pet transporters recently re this and luckily our dog's ok, it is an AVID chip.

Here is the email from MAF - they claim NOT to accept AVID chips:

Hi Amy,

With the implementation of the new import health standard we require the implantation of ISO compliant microchips. We are unfortunately not able to accept AVID microchips.

You will need to go back to your veterinarian and have a second ISO compliant microchip inserted. On completion of this, a copy of the letter from the veterinarian stating that the animal has 2 microchips, and stating the microchip number will need to be forwarded to us.

Then the permit can be issued to you. I will file your application and await the provision of the copy of the veterinarian letter.

Just for information for people bringing dogs from the USA: our dogs' first (of three) official vet checks and blood draws were today. $260 for two dogs (+ fees for one of the tests still pending).

Oh, and the first visit was just for the rabies titer and it cost $325!!
