    Question When to pick oranges?

Does anyone know when to pick oranges in NZ? Have two orange trees, don't know the variety, but as appealing as the fruit looks on one of the trees its still quite bitter. And I'm getting impatient looking at all the lovely oranges on the tree! (I picked some yesterday and will be spending this afternoon trying to figure out what to do with bitter oranges! )

The second tree has only started fruiting, so the fruit is still green. (Well, I think its an orange tree too!)

I can't find anything specific to when to harvest the oranges here in Marlborough - does anyone know or can recommend a good website / book to advise? Thanks.

Try their website; I think it is quite helpful in general.

Linda, the oranges might be the ones you use for marmalade? I forgot the name, but if they are bitter, despite being orange (and not sour....), maybe that is the reason?! You should find out whre next week the s 'n b group meets and take one along for the 'experts'!

It's Seville oranges you use for marmalade. Here are pictures and a recipe. http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgur...Os7KtAayrLmBCQ

The other tree isn't a lime, is it? http://silviahartmann.com/background...background.jpg

When we arrived in NZ in October it was orange season.. (but maybe its region specific??) - that was Northland. Its now mandarin season!

Yeah, oranges are at least a month or two away from being ripe. They'll sweeten up yet. I just try them every week or so, but usually by the time they're ripe they're all gone anyway cos the kids have eaten them or we use them in baking or something.

It does look a little like the Seville oranges in that pic, but then again I'm not sure I could distinguish it from another orange (except maybe a mandarin).

Definitely not a lime tree - have one of those in the garden too, along with a lemon tree, so have managed to identify five of the trees in the garden - the olives and the feijoas were a bit of a giveaway!

Nap, that's what I was thinking, seeing all these oranges / mandarines in the shop and not knowing why mine taste more like lemons than oranges!

I will be baking with the ones I picked with enthusiasm yesterday!

There are still loads left on the tree so I'll wait another week or two before sampling, thanks.
