How do people decide what country to move to?

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping you can help me answer that question. How do people decide to leave their home? How do they select a destination? That's the topic of my PhD thesis, and I'm looking for people who are willing to be interviewed.

I'm talking to either pre-departure or already arrived migrants from: South Africa, UK, Ireland and India.

I will be doing phone interviews with people who are not yet in New Zealand (or people who are outside of the Wellington region).

The really good news is that I can compensate you for your time! I have either Amazon.com or New World vouchers.

This type of interview is a conversation, where you can talk about your opinions and experiences. You will be asked open-ended questions about your background, your reasons for moving to New Zealand and your impressions of New Zealand. An example of a question is “What countries did you consider moving to and why?”

Confidentiality: The names and identifying details of participants are kept confidential and are not shared with any government agencies, used in any thesis, academic papers or presentations resulting from this research.

Also, some of you will remember that I also recruited here for participants in a study a couple of years ago for my master's thesis? I'd like to be part of your thesis, Aidan and extend you whatever little help that I could. I'm from India and seriously (already initiated the process) considering migrating to NZ by mid 2012.

I am indeed looking for people who are not here yet or who are still in the planning stages. I'm trying to make the study balanced, half being people who have already arrived in New Zealand (just recently or many years ago) and half being being who are in the still deciding or planning to come to New Zealand stage.

I'm sorry too. But I will be asking for more help, the next round of my study will be an online survey for anyone (pre-departure and post-arrival) from any country on this same topic. I had to narrow down the countries to include in the interview part of the thesis so I could cover each country well, and still fit it all in the word limit.

The rationale for choosing those countries is that they are among the top five source countries for skilled/business applications (from highest to lowest: UK, South Africa, Philippines, China, India), speak English and have a good spread of wage differences with NZ (higher wages than NZ to lower wages, this because most research in the past has been on economic reasons for migration, though we know that is often not the situation in NZ). I find it sort of ironic that I'm not interviewing Americans, since I am one.

I've just sent you a PM with more details. And the answer is yes! I am just fine with participants who are living outside of their country of origin, in fact many migrants have previous international living experiences, so it would be great to have you in the study.

So if anyone is interested who was born in the UK, Ireland, India or South Africa but is now living somewhere else, you are welcome to contact me as well.
