    Default Importing Engine from UK

A kiwi friend is looking to import a diesel engine from the UK for an old style Range Rover which is considerably cheaper in UK as opposed to NZ, has anyone imported an engine into the country? - we would have thought it would be very difficult even cleaning it to get through customs but they think its more straightforward - any advise?

Engine parts isn't much of a problem importing into NZ. No matter how much grease and oil on them, MAF isn't too concerned just as long as the container has had the methyl bromide treatment in quarantine.

The engine must be a valuable one in order to offset the cost of container shipping.

The requirement for cleaning things being imported is all geared to making sure there is no viable life left - seeds, eggs, creepy-crawlies. There's no need to worry about ordinary grime, surface rust, etc..

Don't forget you'll need to pay GST (on cost of engine + shipping + insurance). Not sure if the's import duty too. So you'd really need to be saving big $$$ to make it worth while. However, given what you're looking for is going to be rarer than hens teeth over here then it's entriely possible. Even a used engine from a write off is going to be tough to find, and therefore command a high price.

So then, if you are going to the trouble of importing 1 engine, why don't you import 2 or 3 engines, keep the best one for yourself and sell the other 2. That should probably be enough income to pay for all the cost of buying them and shipping them here.
    Just a thought.

    Default After Thought....

    n.b.
If they are the Aluminium Rover 215CuI (3500cc) V8's then get someone you can trust in the UK to carefully check them over (preferably see them running) before buying them as they are an easy engine to "cook" and warp the cylinder heads. If poss, get the cylinders compression tested, this will show up any leaks. Water pumps are also a weak point on that engine.
Apart from the above, they are a very nice engine if looked after and serviced regularly.
Probably worth getting a few new spares chucked in the shipping crate as well, full head gasket set and a bottom end gasket set for instance, as well as a collection of the correct type of oil filters and distributor caps and rotor arms as these things are dirt cheap in the UK - except from Halfords... (get points too if it's an older engine) as spares for this engine will be horrendous prices over here (like all car spares are).

Just re-read the original post and it says diesel.... so the above info on the 3500cc V8 isn't very relevant. Sorry about that....

    Range Rovers 1970 - 1996...
    Diesel engines fitted : -
    2.4 L 112hp VM Turbodiesel
    2.5 L 119hp VM Turbodiesel
    2.5 L 111hp 200TDi Turbodiesel
    2.5 L 111hp 300TDi Turbodiesel

Same goes about getting it/them checked out before buying... especially the Turbo, and still worth throwing some spares in the crate before shipping it here.

How do you mean? Are you thinking it's physically a difficult job to do, or that the authorities are being difficult in what they require?
