Default Whats TV like in NZ

    Hi guys
My family loves outdoors and TV, as i have read from other threads NZ's outdoors lifestyle is great. In South Africa we have DSTV (about 120 channels and 4 being HD) although alot of it rubbish there is some good entertainment. I also have a HD PVR and a standard decoder meaning watch 2 and record 2 at the same time for about R550.00 per month also whats TIVO all about. whats it like over there and also land line, ADSL and cell phone charges/contracts.
    Thanks in advance.

The most annoying thing is that they stop showing the few decent things after 4 weeks and shoft them to a daft time if the viewing figures aren't good, and replace them with more imported fly on the wall drama.

Justified - Emmy winner. Moved to 11:30 with no warning after episode 4 or 5.
House - Ditto. Disapeared for a month mid season with no warning.

If you like masterchef (Aussie monday to friday, UK Friday night, NZ 6 nights a week when it's on) and behind the scenes customs, police, british police, ausie police, water police (coastguard), prison police, then you'll love it.

    Default Love TiVo and Freeview

Freeview here is actually very good, amazing picture quality if you're in the right area, and a small but perfectly comprehensive channel list...Peak time evening TV is actually quite dire and gives a really bad impression of what's available...

TiVo is awesome. Freeview here does have too many adverts, but with TiVo that problem goes away. Some programs are shown in late time slots, but with TiVo that makes no difference. Once it's up-and-running and knows what you like and what your favourite shows are you'd be amazed how much good stuff (including loads of movies) is on NZ TV. We never watch anything 'live' any more, so have no idea what time anything is actually on, but it doesn't matter, every time you switch the TV on there's always a whole stack of good stuff to watch. And best of all, once you've bought the box, there's no rip-off monthly subscription.

(It is a bit annoying that Sky refuse to allow access to Prime TV listings, but that just means we don't record or watch anything except rugby on Prime).

not sure what you mean. We have the Prime channel listing on our myskyhdi boxes so can use the planner, record stuff and series link.

Re the adverts, if they weren't there then how would we know when Harvey Norman and briscoes had a sale on?

Just a TiVo thing...Sky won't allow Hybrid TV (who own TiVo) to use their listing for Prime (which Sky owns) - so you can't use the EPG for any of TiVo's standard functionality - season passes, favourites searches, suggestions, recording the next episode of a show even if it moves in the schedule etc. - you can only set it to manually record Prime between specific times on specific dates. Sky claim the reason is that TiVo don't collect viewing data (which would allow them to price advertising more accurately) but many see it simply as a cynical ploy to scupper the opposition. It's funny because Prime listings do work on regular Freeview itself, just not on the TiVo device.

(It's a similar situation with Maori TV on TiVo)

Briscoes and Harvey Norman always seem to have sales on, why would we need to see adverts to tell us that...oh hang on, I see what you did there!

on the plus side, for at least 6 months of the year, you would probs be living outdoors a fair bit so tv is irrelevant.. apart from the prem that is.
personally, i could live without a tv anyway
