Default Foreign company work from NZ.

I just got a call from a US company that would be interested in hiring me for a research role that I could do from home (in NZ). It's not a work at home scam. Hours might be a bit all over the place given the time difference but certainly doable. Anyone else out there (from the US or otherwise) doing this or considering doing this? I guess working into Saturday would be downside but feels like the best of both worlds to me. If it's a finance role for a foreign co and US and European investors would I still have to do the registrations? Thoughts anyone?

Can I bump this? In the new broadband world order there must be other folks out there with the same type of idea as mine.

I've heard a lot of IT people are working for British firms in NZ for lifestyle reasons. There must be *someone* in the same boat as us. I'm getting close to finalizing something with a US company. I would think with the new fat broadband pipe and the world becoming a smaller place that this would be an option for a lot of knowledge workers. Really NZ in 10 years could be quite the place. Another reason on top of family reasons that we want to live in NZ so much. I think with such a well-educated work force which - lets face it - is relatively cheap will be a magnet. Maybe Peter Theil is right?

My friend does the work for US company in NZ , but there are bit of problems he encountered around salary payments as the US company has to pay in NZ (I guess due to tax regulations etc - I am not sure on this). Hence they had to set-up a contact in a NZ company which had US operations and the US company will pay to NZ company which in turn would make payments to him in NZD locally. But this cost him additional amount from his salary, which he had to pay to local NZ company to do this for him and the US based company .

Other then that he is able to work from home completely without any other issue.

If you PM me your email address, I will sent my friend's email address to you and he may be able to help you more on this set-up and the way it works.

i will be in a similar situation if I decide to take an offer from a consulting firm in Australia (see my other thread here). But they are willing to register their business in NZ to make it work. I assume that I will be paid in NZD but without any actual office, I will be working from home as well. I'd like to know what others have to say about this, thanks!

I wouldn't care in what currency I was paid. Actually US$ would probably be preferable. I guess I wouldn't want to give them reasons to say no. I'm surprised there aren't more "takers" on this thread. Feels like the wave of the future to me.

Does feel like a trend...which means property prices may well not come back down hard in good school districts if at the margin people are earning NY or LA or London salaries working in Auckland or Wellington. Just a thought.

dede have you figured out yet how tax deductions will work in a work from home setup? I'm not yet in NZ so I don't know but do you file your own tax to the government? I read that employers take care of it and just deducts tax from employee's pay, is that correct?

Truly complex. Not quite there yet...but I do know there are some good sites if you google NZ US tax. Looks like a good specialist in Auckland who can file US and NZ taxes for me - and tell me how to pay. Doesn't quite answer your question but I *think* we are in slightly different boats. I just want to be 100% above board the entire time and not worry about it. When they get their claws into you, they are vicious (both IRD and INS).
