Check the NZ Immigration website www.immigration.govt.nz

As far as I know there is still only one residence visa.
Other than that there are work , study, and visitor visas ...

When you get a residence visa it is permanent .. more or less. they can revoke it if you are a bad boy and of course you have to have it moved into your new passport (only an issue for short passports like Canada)

Please note name changes as of November 2010. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra.../residence.htm Residence is the first 'for ever' visa. Permanent Residence is available after two years (equivalent to old PR with IRRV).
