Default Prepaid mobile phone for a short term use?

    Hello,

We are going to New Zealand for 3 weeks in Janaury for our honeymoon.
This may sound a bit silly question, but could anybody tell us if it is possible to buy/rental a mobile phone that's worth paying for 3 weeks?
We are travelling from a backpacker to another by a car, and thought it would be hand to have a phone for our arrival/change in bookin etc. in short notice.

    Looking forward to your comment!

I know this would partly depend on whether your existing phone is unlocked or not (which of course you could get done before leaving), but maybe the cheapest option would be to get a pay as you go NZ SIM card. You can rent OR buy these. The mobile phone companies have stalls at or near the airport.

Hello JanM! Thank you for your quick reply.
I think one of our phones are unlocked (but not sure). Another concern is that we also need to charge the battery but it's a bit scary to use voltage inverter on our old mobiles.
So maybe it's better to buy a body and SIM card..

Any idea for the price in average?

Voltage inverter? Aren't your phones European ones?

Here are the main mobile providers in NZ that I'm aware of, in case you go with buying. http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&cp=25...com.co.nz/home
And I hear that the Warehouse shop just near the airport sells phones very cheaply - Google for the location.

There are loads of great deals around with 2degrees. They have some phones with SIM cards for around $50, so dearer and some cheaper. It is a good network- with cheap calls and texts both nationally and internationally. You would probably be best going to somewhere like The Warehouse, rather than the phone shops direct if you want a phone as well as a SIM.

On my last trip home in March, I bought a cheapie mobile phone at the Vodafone shop. I paid about NZ $80 for it - then just bought pre-paid minutes.

JandM, sorry you are right. We thought that the voltage was different. Indeed there isn't a problem with it.
..and the Warehouse! I didn't remember that they also sell this stuff. Thank you both, I think we go there in Auckland when we fly into NZ

By the way wiseboy22, your ITA just got approved this month?
    Congratulations!!

You will find Telecom and Vodafone outlets right in front of arrival gates.
