Sea salt

Another question: sea salt. Easy to find, like in every store, or only at health food stores?

I suppose I'd love to hear what other health nuts have found in terms of health foods in general. I imagine I will love the fresh fruit and vegetables as well as the seafood and the fresh pastured meat. But what about fair trade/organic products in general? Are they easy to find?

Here in Dunedin we have a very good Otago Farmers Market run every Saturday morning, which now is also branching out with less stalls on Wednesday afternoon; check their web site.

'The' shop is Taste Nature with a wide range; again - web site.

The offer in supermarkets is a little limited, though New World in the City Centre has increased its range; Health2000 also offers products in this sector.

A variety of Himalayan salt is available in Taste Nature (see above) and I think I recall having seen it in Health2000.

There is sea salt, labelled as such, available in our New World, for example- it is even Marlborough Sea salt 'made' about 30kms south of Blenheim. You can get a flaky or a coarse variety as well as sea salt from other sources, as well.

In New Zealand most normal table salt is iodized to compensate for a deficiency of iodine in New Zealand food, which can lead to goitre. It's probably something to be aware of when thinking about your diet in NZ. I'd look for sea salt that has decent levels of iodine.

Recent evidence from a number of studies has indicated that the iodine status of New Zealanders is now declining to the point where intervention is again required to ensure that iodine deficiency disorders do not once again widely affect the New Zealand population.

Why is there a re-emergence in iodine deficiency?

The re-emergence in iodine deficiency appears to be due to:
• the increased consumption of commercially-prepared foods (manufactured mostly with non-iodised salt)
• the declining use of iodine-containing sanitizers by the dairy industry
• less salt being used in home prepared foods as a response to the health messages to reduce salt intake

I get Pink Himalayan Salt to refill the grinder at our local Pack an' save at Param (Coastlands, Paraparaumu), bought it at NW, bought it at Woolies or whatever it is called now also bought it from specialist Indian Spice Shops (along with decent tea).
I didn't think it was a problem to get hold of.
