Default Where in New Zealand can one sail and swim in clear warm ocean water without fear of sharks or rough weather?

Hoping for some advice of places to go sailing with my sons next year, Nelson area looks like a great place as does Bay of Islands...

    Can anyone help?

About sharks, this may be of interest. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/sharks1.html Incidents are rare, and that's with a population with a high proportion of water-sport practitioners.

As far as weather is concerned, NZ consists of islands in an ocean - of course there can be bad weather at times, anywhere around the coast. But there are good weather forecasting facilities, such as these. http://www.marineweather.co.nz/ http://www.boating.co.nz/nzweather.html http://www.metservice.com/marine/coastal/index And to see what the weather has been doing in the past, anywhere in NZ that interests you, have a look at the archive records here. http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:00000.8.93119 (Enter the location, then look at History, near the bottom left.)

Based on my experience here most people are sailing either in the harbours or on lakes whereas in the ocean they are yachting.

The further north you go the warmer the water. Auckland is always a good bet, it is the city of sails, but generally, pretty much anywhere on the east coast is going to offer sheltered sailing. Nelson and Marlborough are also good choices, the Marlborough sounds attracts yachts from all over the world.
