Default INZ 1000 Visa vs Skilled Visa

Help would be really appreciated in this area!

Me - A kiwi citizen, and my husband - A British citizen, are currently living in the UK. We both work in TV and plan to move to NZ, with the idea of working on shows in Australia too from time to time.

    Questions:
*Is the INZ 1000 a permanent residency visa? Or will he have to spend 2 years in NZ and then apply for permanent residency?

*Can he work in Australia on the INZ 1000?

*Would he be better off applying for a skilled visa? He is a TV Editor which is on the list. Would he be able to work in Australia on that?

    Look forward to responses.

    Cheers

    Hello and welcome.

INZ 1000 is an application form, not a visa in itself. (This may be why nobody had answered your query before.)

Your husband, being your partner, will be applying for Residence under the Family stream. Here's the page outlining the requirements from the INZ website http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...ly/default.htm. He might get permanent residence straight away, depending on how long your partnership is and how long you have been away from NZ - the operational manual has the details. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/opsmanual/index.htm (Go to Residence » Family Categories » F2 Partnership Category » F2.5 How do partners of New Zealand citizens and residents qualify for a residence class visa?)

F2.5.1 Eligibility for a permanent resident visa for partners of New Zealand citizens living overseas

A principal applicant may be granted a permanent resident visa (RA1.5) if:
they meet all the other criteria for a residence class visa under the Partnership Category; and
they have a New Zealand citizen partner who has been residing outside New Zealand for a period of at least five years at the time the application is made; and
the couple have been living together in a genuine and stable relationship for at least five years at the time the application is made.
To meet the requirements of a(ii) above, the New Zealand citizen partner must either be
outside New Zealand at the time the application is made; or
have been in New Zealand for less than three months after residing outside New Zealand for at least five years at the time the application is made.
For the purposes of these instructions, residing outside New Zealand means spending less than 3 months in New Zealand in each of the five 12 month periods immediately preceding either:
the date the application is made (if the application was made outside New Zealand); or
the date the New Zealand citizen partner arrived in New Zealand (if the application was made in New Zealand.
Any secondary applicants included in an application where the principal applicant is eligible for a permanent resident visa under these instructions may also be granted a permanent resident visa (RA1.5).
Any applicants who do not meet the criteria set out in this section but who meet all other requirements of the Partnership Category should be granted a resident visa (RA1.1)

NZ work visas do not count for Australia at all, neither Resident visas nor the skilled one. It's not unless someone is a NZ citizen that they can work in Australia without an extra visa. http://www.immi.gov.au/media/fact-sheets/17nz.htm It looks as though one of these special visas would be the kind of thing that would be of use to him, but the Australian immigration authority's site would be the place to research further. http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/specialist-entry/420/ http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/specialist-entry/423/

    Hi JandM,

Wow, you know your stuff! Thanks for all the info... totally makes sense!

He needs two separate visa's... one for NZ and one for OZ. We qualify for being together for more than 5 years including living outside of NZ during that time.

    Thanks again for your help

Glad it's useful info. Now I'm curious - what kind of programmes does he work on (I saw the difference in Australian visa required for documentary and entertainment), and what line of work do you do in TV?

We both work on reality TV shows like Big Brother, Biggest Looser, Secret Millionaire, Top model etc etc. He's an Editor and I'm a Producer.

    Thanks again for your help
