Does anybody know of dinghy sailing clubs preferably near christchurch.

Is there a big sailing scene in NZ, you certainly have the wind for it !Hopefully joining isnt as difficult as the immigration process :-)

    Thanks

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auckland "Auckland is popularly known as the "City of Sails" because the harbour is often dotted with hundreds of yachts and has more per capita than any other city in the world"

I actually looked in the index of my lonely planey guide :-). Therees a good website http://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/ClubDirectory.aspx that lists all the yacht and dinghy sailing clubs in NZ.
And there are a few commercial cruises out of Auckland, one of particular interes you have a 75 % chance of seeing whales ! (sailnezealand.co.nz)

If you're in Chch, you won't have to bother going up there to see whales as you'll be a hop, skip and a jump from Kaikoura and possibly another few skips to Marlborough Sounds where both whales and dolphins abound.

Oh, Kaikoura whale-watching trip - truly, one of the best afternoons of my life.

I've also been on a relative's yacht out from the Auckland area, which was great, but of all the wildlife they see habitually (including orca and dolphins), we just saw little blue penguins. They were also lovely, if not quite so spectacular. They lie on their side and flip a flipper at you!

Yes lots of sailing in Nz. I belong to the Napier Sailing club and over new year we hosted 48 nations in the world opti championship.

Heres my baby (a GP14) whom I will have to leave me behind. How much would a new dinghy cost on NZ, is there a locally produced dinghy.

    Thanks

Don't know about new prices but you can look at trademe for whatever is for sale there. Lots of locally produced sailing craft of all sizes - the commonly produced statistic is that one in 3 households in Auckland owns a boat (of some description) and there are plenty elsewhere in the country too.

Quite a good choice. My daughter sailed with the Waimakariri club for while. They sail on the Waimak' estuary to the east of Kaiapoi. I'm not sure if they survived the earthquakes though. Some of that area was very hard hit.
