Your accommodation when you arrived and would you recomend it?

When you arrived in kiwiland what was your first sort of accommodation? Would you recommend this type of accommodation and have you any tips for getting it sorted out?

In-laws. Highly recommend, but unlikely to have availablility.

Backpackers. Highly recommended. You always have company for dinner, meet people from all over the world and backpackers owners are usually locals so its good for building local contacts. Ours have been instrumental for our stay in NZ thus far

I would suggest - Hotel for 1st week and then move to either rental or furnished bach.
Having hotel accomodation for a week - has 2 advantages, 1- discount hotel rates , 2 -hotels accept late arrival and provide breakfast ,since you will need rest after long flight.

I'd second that. I really enjoyed staying to the BASE hostel in Auckland on my recce trip. You are around lots of people who are interesting, good Internet access and it's central....and cheap!

Backpackers for me too. I stayed at K Rd City Travellers for almost 20 days. Loved the free unlimited wifi.

We originally stayed with friends for a couple of weeks, which was great as it saved us a bit of money and took off the pressure initially - plus they stayed with us for a month when they arrived on their OE in London, so they were more than happy to return the favour.

As grateful as we were, after a couple of weeks we did fancy some space for ourselves, especially as DH was starting a new job and I was going to be on my own with DD during the week, so we ended up getting a 1 bedroom apartment at Quest on upper Queen Street. It was fairly small and expensive, but suited us well as I could check out the city easily with DD during the day and DH could walk to work. Luckily we only needed to stay there for 2.5 weeks though as we found a house that we liked and the sale went through quickly, but I would definitely recommend the Quest (or another serviced apartment in town) if your budget allows it.

We booked a holiday home for 4 weeks. It was great as there were 5 of us in our family, We had a house with all the facilities and no worries about bills, It gave us chance to find our feet and get used to shopping and settling in better. Definitely do the same when we go back.

We stayed in the Waldorf St Martins Lane for 8 weeks, my wife, 18 month old son and I.

I am working in the CBD, my wife settling in and getting son settled as well.

We found their 2 bed apartment pretty decent, quiet, centralish, friendly staff, good internet connection for that all important emailing, websurfing you'll need to to do to get sorted. Good for parks and the city center, very close to the brilliant Auckland Domain, museum etc.

It was great until our container arrived and we could move into our new house.

$540 per week all bills except internet/phone included.

Six years ago I stayed at a B&B (guest house back then) that specialises on (potential) immigrants. It is located in Torbay, North Shore, Auckland. Pleasant and helpful people; immigrants themselves 20 (?) years ago.
