Testing the Water
How cold is it in NZ ?
Just curious about weather patterns..
It doesn't bother me as I prefer colder weather(could happily live in the south pole), but it'll be nice to see pics of NZ in all weather.
Also what do new arrivals think of the weather and their opinions.

Its all relative. We were from Alaska so NZ not cold to us even in winter.

I would classify the climate here as moderate, including Central Otago.

NZ mainly has a maritime climate so the weather is mild from a global perspective, and it never really gets *that* cold outside here, unless you are up in the mountains. Most of our heavier winter coats are stick packed up in a suitcase even after 5 years here, as it's never felt cold enough outside to need them. However, housing is of a very poor standard compared to other countries, which can REALLY affect your perspective on temperature. Many of us Brits moan about being cold indoors here....I am very guilty myself. I have also met several people here from Canada, specifically Ontario, Alberta and Saskachewan, and they have all, without exception, told me how surprised they have been to feel so cold here given the climate has nowhere near the extremes of Canada. One woman also tried to explain the difference between 'wet snow' and 'dry snow' as an analogy with how they found NZ, but I'm afraid it was rather lost on me. The very fact that expats seem to start discussing the weather, housing and heating options at almost every gathering is very telling!

These are the details from my own weather station that I set up in December last year. It cools down overnight at the moment but its still quite warm and sunny during the day. I don't really think Auckland has four seasons, just three. That's a longer spring, a longer summer and a longer autumn.
