You should verify this with Singapore, as things can change.

Occupational safety rules require that the checked baggage weight for passengers travelling to/from Australia, Brunei, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom does not exceed 32 kg (70 lb) per piece. Any bags weighing more than 32 kg (70 lb) must be broken down such that each piece weighs less than 32 kg (70 lb).

Passengers are required to re-pack their baggage if the baggage weight exceeds the above-stipulated limitation per piece. It should be noted that this 'physical' baggage weight limitation is an issue relating to Occupational Health Safety and is not related to baggage allowance and charges, which is a separate subject matter. Passengers with excess baggage beyond their checked baggage allowance will be charged excess baggage". Solitaire PPS and PPS members are entitled to double the free baggage allowance for the respective class of travel. KrisFlyer Elite Gold members are entitled to an additional 20 kg (44 lb) of free baggage for the respective class of travel.

Yes, but many airlines won't accept bags more than 23kg now--unless in Business or First or Premium Economy class. And many airlines have different rules for specific routes: Air NZ has different allowances on LHR-AKL via HKG than LHR-AKL via LAX.

    Hi

Thanks for your replies, I have checked with Singapore and they will accept 4 peices of luggage each but no bag can be over 32kg. We get double the amout each so 40kg each as long as we show our migrant visa to them.

Good to know. Different airlines have different policies so always worth checking with them. The 32kgs limit is an industry standard I believe as it is related to the health and safety of baggage handlers.

Some people might get confused about the term "allowance". The 23kgs limit imposed by many airlines (Air NZ included) is simply the weight they will allow you to take for free. You can take a heavier bag (up to 32kgs) but you will have to pay excess baggage fees on the difference.

They charge per extra kilo and it will differ from airline to airline. Check your airline's website for up to date details.

It is not cheap, so if you think you may be over your allowance, it might be worth air freighting it instead. We did this and it worked out about £6p/kilo which I thought was reasonable. It takes between 10-14 days.

It varies with airlines, and whether accompanied or unaccompanied, too.

If you haven't very much extra, ordinary post can be a decent option. Then there's http://www.parcel2go.com/ - have had very good service.

Air New Zealand charge per bag - it's 70 pounds for a 23kg bag, double what it was when we came over last August but still pretty reasonable.
