Default EOI needed to apply on Talent Visa?

My wife has a job offer with accredited company and has been advised by her recruitment agent (not an immigration specialist) that she just needs to submit a talent visa app with all the required documents (police, check medical etc). I'm applying on the partnership visa. Do either of us have to still do an EOI?

This is just what we did and I have no knowledge of the partnership visa route. We applied for one of us with the job offer to get the talent visa and the other person got a work visa based on that. We didn't do EOI. Once we submitted the application with the police checks and medical information it was very quick and we got our passports and visas back in a matter of days.
    Good luck with the application.

The 'work visa based on that' IS a partner-sponsored work visa.

Neither of you needs to do an EOI at this stage, for the accredited employer visa+work visa. However, you are going to end up with visas with a limited life. Because rules can change, though, and it has happened that people have gone confidently to renew their visa only to find that their career is not considered in demand any more, many migrants decide to submit an EOI to go for a Residence visa as well, while they are sure they qualify.

to add more to JandM's response work visas through an accredited employer are given only for 30 months and you have to renew when it runs out later. and if you apply for a work visa on partnership you will also be given the same time as of your partner.

We did the same thing as what JandM described, since we intend to live in NZ for good anyway. Applying for SMC (by lodging the EOI) in parallel with applying for WTR may have the added advantage of being able to use the same medical certs and police clearance for both application, given that you get a CO assigned before those document "expires" AFAIK.

    All the best!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think we might go down the same route as rme. We're planning on staying for good but have a limited time to start the job (Oct) so the talent visa route was recommended as the quickest way to get there but makes sense to get the SMC visa now that wife's job is on the in demand list.

If you are going to apply for SMC as well, you really should consider the advantages of applying the other way around i.e. put in your EOI immediately and a work visa later should the residence visa not come through in time.
