Default partnership visa under Family Stream category

    Hi everybody,

Excuse me (in advance) for what may seem like a silly question. I've been through the immigration system in the USA and so maybe this has confused my interpretation as to the NZ system off applying for visas.

My gf is currently in Wellington and although we only met over the last year we are both confident that things will go very well when I arrive to spend more time with her. We have looked over the possibility of myself applying for a temp work visa under the family stream, and from my research on this site it seems you don't need an enormous amount of time based evidence to get the ball rolling on these visas.

My question is, should we apply for this type visa, would I have to apply outside NZ? I'm English and so I'm hoping that I wouldn't have to fly all the way back to the UK to make the application.

Again this may sound silly, but I remember having to be in England when I applied for my fiancee visa under the US system and I think this is where I am getting confused.

    Thanks again for any information

    Paul

Wipe the whole US immigration experience from your mind. Two countries' laws can be alike on some points but entirely different on others. As far as applying to NZ is concerned, your source needs to be the NZ Immigration website http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/ (and if you need really fine detail, their Operational Manual can sometimes help http://www.immigration.govt.nz/opsmanual/).

These are the instructions for the kind of visa you are talking about. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...milystream.htm You certainly do not have to be in your country of origin in order to apply. As it says there, you have to be currently living together, and that could be anywhere - some members of the forum have gathered their proof of living as a couple while travelling, not in the home country of either of them.

    Thanks JandM,

That certainly puts my mind at rest, I have all those links on my bookmark and I will read the operations manual a bit more in detail. Forums like these are invaluable!
