    Default National Insurance

    Hi All

Wondering if there is anything like the National Insurance Number similar to the one in UK that we need to apply for once we arrive in NZ. Any inputs on this is highly appreciated.

You will need to get yourself an IRD number. All information about what it is and how to get one is here:

    Hope this helps.

As PP states, IRD number is the first one to apply for when you arrive in NZ. IRD number is for tax purposes.
Also if you are eligible for public medical care, you will be given a NHI number. Also, it will be taken care by your GP when you get registered with them.

Haven't come across anything same as NIN but usually its just IRD no. which is used for any money related matters and everything else seems to go with First Name, Last name & Date Of Birth combination.
