    Default rental verbal agreement

    Hi
We inquired about an extension of 6 months to our present rental
The rental agency has informed us that this has been agreed and a new contract is ready to be signed and also in NZ rental law a verbal agreement is binding
As we have only made an inquiry I do not believe that we have entered into an agreement
We are thinking of buying a house instead of continuing renting
Our present contract expires mid Oct
Does anyone know the laws as this applies

    Regards

    Francis

I don't know the answer to your question but suggest you have a look on the Building & Housing website which has a section on tenancy. Here's the link to the website: http://www.dbh.govt.nz/tenants-index

It seems that agreements can be enforced if they are verbal

Tenancy agreements must be in writing but can still be enforced if they are verbal.

    Taken from here
    http://www.dbh.govt.nz/tenancy-az-t-z

However If I was you I would contact the tenants advisory line http://www.dbh.govt.nz/tenancy-directory

Explain the situation and see what they say. As you only made an enquiry and did not make a verbal agreement for another 6 months the advisory line is the best people to call.

    Thank you
I think that given the fact we requested the extension we have entered into an agreement
It's a nice house and weare happy here at present
