    Default Shipping a motorhome?

Hi, I have searched the forum but cant find an answer to my questions.

I have noticed the price of both new & used vans to be a lot more in nz, especially VW commercials so was planning to ship out a VW T5 from the uk. Then I started looking at motorhome prices in nz because ideally I wanted one when I eventually get out next year as well as a van. WOW, how pricey are they compared to the uk so Im now planning to ship over a motorhome and buy a van in nz.
The motorhome will be about 25ft/4 berth/diesel 4-5 years old, very similar to models in nz so getting it registered should be ok (ie no rust, plenty of safety features, euro 5 rated ect).

Has anyone shipped one over before, can they recommend a shipping company?

How much will shipping be, say roll on roll off?
Is there any gst or dutys to pay?
How much for it to be registered with NZTA?
Does the milometer have to change to kms?

    Any advice please?

    Cheers

1st quote for roll on roll off shipping is £3500 from autoshippersuk.

Southampton to Auckland, Service operates 3 sailings per month – approx transit time 36 days – direct

    Hi Mcvee,

We are aiming for NZ end of Jan next yr and I too am looking to take my VW T5. I havnt looked into everything yet (hopefully this week) BUT what I understood is that you had to have owned the vehicle for at least 12mths prior to exporting to NZ (Or you pay tax). Basically if its been in your name for 1yr+ you just pay to get it there and get it through customs etc.

I think for mine it was @£3k added into my container (20ft now a 40ft) and includes the transfer fees, checks, Rego, WoF.

I agree they are way more expensive over there, guess as all imports and less of them. My van is 7yrs old and still looks well worth taking.

I,ve still to add some seats in the back as they are apparently really expensive to get the paperwork done over there, also seats must be scarce etc.

Good luck and if you find out anything please drop me a line or add to this thread.

    Cheers,
    Hound.

Only if you've owned it for less than 12 months I believe. Remember that ownership and being the registered keeper are not the same thing!

I'd allow $1000 to get it on the road.

We brought our T4, in it's own 20ft container. RoRo sounded a bit rough for me, so containter it was. Somewhere around 1300Euros (shipped from Bremerhaven), but that didn't include anything at this end, so had to organise getting it transported to a warehouse, and then AA place on the back of a truck (can't drive it until registered). We had it cleaned professionally, but they did the underside again here. We also had it packed full of stuff, which we had to go through MAF, too.

Not entirely hassle-free, but absolutely worth it, would do it again. There's a garage down the road specialising in VWs, and although getting parts can take longer, we haven't really had bad experiences so far.

Hi, thanks for replying to my thread on shipping back in december. Just wondered if you have made the move to nz yet and did you take the T5?
Im thinking of selling my T4 & buying a T5 soon and want to take it too, wondered what it cost to ship? The AA advised me for the entry certification and first registration you need to allow about $1000 or $1400 if it is diesel.

    Regards

So you don't think you'd be going before you'd owned the new one for 12 months, then?

Looks like I would have to swallow the gst but I may be able to save on the uk vat with the export vat exemption scheme. Overall still looks like a saving considering the lack of choice on varity/specs on vw commercials in nz is scarce.
Well I hope to go in the next 3 months or so, but judging on how the process can go it could be longer yet, so if I get a T5 now and we dont leave for another 12 months (god forbid) Ill save on the gst?!!

    Hi folks,

I have a 1997 VW T4 that I'm pondering taking with me when I (hopefully) get accepted on a NZ Uni course in 2015. I've potentially got a buyer now which is why this debate has come up early .......

My van is 2.7m high - higher than a 20ft container (tut) so it looks like RORO is my only option even though it's a small van. Can any of you recommend a cheap (ha!) RORO company ... or might you have a solution to the shipping container issue?

It looks like I might get stung for 12.5% of the purchase price as well as I don't have permanent residency. Any advice there too?

    Cheers! Beni

No you can get a "High Cube" extra high 20' container. This will still be cheaper than the RORO rate by a long shot. I had a motorhome shipped out of Southampton port back in July by Wilhelmsen They offered the most direct route to shipping to NZ from the UK. Was very pleased of their service. Beware before you bring a vehicle over, make sure it can be NZ registered. That is you know full history of the VW. If it's been in a major accident, don't bother trying to bring it over as the compliance and repair work certification will cost a fortune.

FYI, the Fiat Ducato motor home (6.3m long) costed me over $9K NZD just on shipping. RORO was only option.
