    Default year seven/eight

My 12 yr old son (turns 13 in October) will probably go to Newlands Intermediate...
I've been searching for curriculum info for years seven and eight but not finding anything on the ministry site, I'm sure its there just can't see it lol does anyone have a link? or a kid in either of those grades who would share what they are doing (what are they reading, what are they doing in math etc). I'd like to get him ready as much as possible :-)

I am not terribly sure what they are actually doing, nor do I really get the reports we get (let alone what a 'student led conference' is supposed to tell me...), but maybe the below could be helpful:

    General:

    http://nzcurriculum.tki.org.nz/Natio...tics-standards

    Specific to Year 8:

Excuse the interruption - just from curiosity, what writing do they learn in schools in Canada, then?

No - I never learned cursive writing either (I'm a kiwi) and when I lived in the USA I often couldn't figure out people's handwriting with its weird squiggly capital letters. We learned "printing" and then "joined up printing" (my son in Year 4 isn't up to that yet so I don't know what they're calling it now).

What is the difference between cursive and joined up writing?

Our children here did some kind of 'pen license', I think that was the joined up writing, I seem to recall this was in year 5.

I think of American-style cursive as a specific style of writing / font in which the letters are formed in a particular way so that all the letters in a word are joined. Some of the letters are shaped differently from what I'm used to, so it can be hard for me to read. By "joined up writing", I mean handwriting in which the letters are formed separately, but some of the "flicks" are joined for speed.

Cursive is a name for just one kind of joined up writing. This is roughly what would be used in English schools, with ordinary printed capitals. http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=cur...r:11,s:0,i:129 They changed over to this from italic, which HAD been the preferred style, like the bottom one here, in the early 90s. http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=ita...r:18,s:0,i:134 The writing with the very different capitals is usually called copperplate (in the UK). http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=cop...9,r:0,s:0,i:66

Edited to say, simulpost with the above. In UK parlance, joined up writing has all the letters joined, except for in italic writing where the lower parts of g, j and y have a hook, not a loop, so you restart after them.

    hello!

The school I work at is a full primary, so takes kids from Years 0-8. Our Yr7-8 team have a section on the website that might be useful or at least interesting
