Default Auckland bound February 2013 - with Cat help required~

    Hello all

we are currently awaiting ours visas to be processed but have jobs lined up and we are moving over in February 2013.

We are bringing our wee cat Harris with us and would like some advice if anyone can help.

We will for the first week or so go to a hotel while Harris remains in Quarantine etc however we then urgently want to go into furnished letting ideally near or in city centre until our stuff arrives via shipping. or even a longer term with an additional bedroom for our stuff when it comes (approx' 12-16 weeks).... we are advised that finding somewhere that takes a house-cat is difficult? is this true - has anyone got any examples / names / contacts who could help as we arent putting him into a cattery....!

Has anyone else gone with a cat? any experiences all are welcomed

    thanks all Lu

    Hi pmtogo,

Welcome and what a great time to arrive in the summer ! :-). We emigrated back in 2008 and brought both our cats with us. As the cats were from the UK there was no need for the cats to be quarantined. The cats came over a week after we arrived and we picked them up from the airport in their crate. We used a specialist firm to do all the required injections etc and they dealt with all the paperwork etc. Costly though! more for 2 cats than it was for the 4 of us ! but we could never of left them behind...

Also wouldnt worry too much about a cat and rental. Most landlords say no pets. buts its negoitable and we had no problem in several rentals with our 2 cats.

Never had a problem getting a rental. Always found it was easier to have the conversation once you decide you like the house and then mention it at the end.

Did you manage to find somewhere easily? We are doing the same thing but to Wellington this September and want a temp rental while we look for a longer term one. Just been firing off some emails to holiday lettings and they have said no cats and good luck because no one will take on cats any more?!?!? I am hoping she is just anti cat and that most others will be OK. Shame if we are out of the market for a decent holiday rental while we look for our normal rental through an estate agent. What did you / anyone else do in the end?

    Any advice or thoughts welcome...

The thread you are asking in is 5 years old.., so might not be seen by the person who started it.
I personally doubt that you will be able to find a holiday home with a cat, I guess that owners need to be aware that a lot of people are allergic to cats or dogs and they can't then rent the house out without having to mention it. Yes, cleaning.., but for someone with a really bad allergy that might not be enough.
Finding a rental with a cat might be not that difficult, lots of landlords seem to be fine with cats, not so happy with dogs.
