Visa for our recce trip??

Hi

Can anyone help? We're coming over from the uk in February for just under 3 weeks.
From what I have read I beleive we won't need a holiday visa as we both have more than 12 months left on our passport. On the way back we have an overnight stop in Australia (13 hours). I've had a look on the Australian immigration website and it mentions a transit visa. Does anyone know if we will need one of these? Didnt really understand the info I read.
Would appreciate any help if anyone knows?

On UK passports you can spend up to 6 months in NZ as a visitor, I think. For Oz I believe that you will need a transit visa...not visited yet, so still to find out!
