Thumbs up Tips on how to enhance your job applications

    Hi everyone,

I've been working in HR & recruitment for the past 10 years, and I've seen thousands of CV's and job applications in this time. Whilst I've seen many great applications, I've also seen many where I wished I could help to rewrite them! I'm currently on maternity leave from my role and so I decided to have a little project and I've started a blog. I hope through my posts there will be useful tips and advice to help people enhance their job applications It is based on my experience as a recruiter, so may not work in every situation, but I hope people will find it helpful!

It's totally free, with not strings attached (other than I've been wanting to find a way to help people) and I welcome any feedback or questions.

It's only a week old, so I'm still building up the content, but feel free to take a look!

You can follow me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/maketheshortlist

    or my blog is: www.maketheshortlist.blogspot.com

    Thanks
    Shannon

I was thinking of what is best way for immigrants to create a cover letter for job applications from overseas. Most people try to apply & Secure a job after they have Reisdence Visa (before physically moving to NZ) from overseas to reduce uncetaintity after move. How can they word their cover letter to show case Recruiting HR that they are genuinely interetsed and committed to move to NZ .

    Hi Shawankit
Sorry for the delay in replying. This is a tricky one, and to be honest I don't have a lot of experience with hiring people from overseas. The reason for this is more often than not, I have been able to fill the vacancy with suitable candidates that are already in NZ and available to start work straight away. I also haven't had to recruit for specialist type positions. My positions have often been general type positions that have attracted many suitable applicants. If we were struggling to fill the position with suitable candidates within NZ, then we would more than likely look at candidates outside of NZ. So to be honest, it is probably the time factor for a lot of employers and a decision based on how many suitable applicants have applied who are already in NZ and available (and eligible) to work straight away.
Sorry I can't be of more help on this one.
    Cheers

    Hi Shannon,

Thanks for putting this information together it looks great. I am currently living in the UK and looking to move over to NZ in September/October this year. I am an Australian Passport holder and work in Occupational Health Nursing in the UK (have 30 years experience as a nurse - 3 years work experience in Australia). It would seem that the time factor is important to a prospective employer, and I wondered, bearing in mind that I will have PR on arrival whether it would be worth applying for a position (with a very good cover letter) from the UK prior to my arrival later this year. Do you have any other advice you could give?

    Many thanks
    Debs
