Returning Resident - query about health care for toddler (entering on visa)

Hi,
We've been working away from NZ for a couple of years and are returning in May. We have a son born in Canada who will be returning with us and he is 15 months old. We will have to apply for a visitor visa for him but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone had any recommendation or advice about health care. We obviously have access to public health care but our son won't and I do have some concerns about that as he does have multiple protein allergies and anaphylaxis and we have been waiting here to see a specialist. We will have to arrange some sort of comprehensive health insurance but I'm not sure where to start. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Are you a NZ citizen? If so, your child is a NZ citizen by descent, apply for it, and the child is entitled to the same health care a normal citizen or resident is entitled to.

Your kid is automatically eligible for public health care coz you are either Permanent residents or old irrv holder and your kid is less than 17 years old.

I'm anaphylactic to peanuts and find that NZ is more allergy aware than the U.S. If I question ingredients (in a restaurant) in the U.S. I usually get a blank look - not so in NZ. However, it is my understanding that epi-pens aren't cheap here but I haven't had to buy one here yet so I may be misinformed. Good luck!
