    Default Wellington City - Rental

    Hi Everyone,

My sister and I are moving to Wellington at the start of April. We're looking for a nice safe area to live which is close to the centre and also on a really good bus route for commuting. We're ideally looking to rent a house. Can anyone help suggest suburbs of Wellington that we should look at?

Any help is very very appreciated!!

You probably know this already but you can find houses to rent on Trademe.
    http://www.trademe.co.nz/property
That will give you a clearer idea about prices etc. Have a look, there will be people here who can tell you about specific suburbs.

And if you want to find out about bus routes there is a network map here:
    http://www.metlink.org.nz/network-map/

All the timetables are on that site too.

Most suburbs are actually quite close to town, even what might look a long way on the map like the Miramar Peninsula only takes at the most 30 minutes on the bus, less for express buses.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have further questions!

Hello cshdid2 and welcome to ENZ

An indication of your weekly rental budget would be useful too, together with an indication of what else you and your sister might appreciate.

    I found this website

    http://www.rentalresults.co.nz/Subur...b-profile.html

which gives a bit of an insight into the Wellington suburbs in terms of demographics - helped me put the properties I was finding on Trademe into some perspective.

This one: http://profile.idnz.co.nz/Default.as...pg=8530&gid=10 I would treat with a bit more caution, as the data in it is from 2006. This is slightly different as it shows the neighbourhoods ranked according to the deprivation index (the factors they used are shown).

Googlemaps is quite good for finding out actual distances and public transport options and times. And don't forget you can do streetview from googlemaps to see a bit more than the clever photos on Tradme show - like sometimes the electricity pylon in your back garden!

The general rule seems to be that the further out of the city you go the cheaper the rents are or you get more property for the same money, you then need to offset that against travel time and public transport costs.

Good luck in Wellington, I'm arriving in April too (if NZQA get a move on!)

I think we're aiming for around 500 NZD a week as around our upper limit. We'd like a house to rent rather than an apartment. I mean, if we can get a bus easily that's less than 30 minutes into the town centre then that's great, so that would be the longest commute I'd like to do. I'm just finding it impossible to narrow down areas!
