The rules state that you can be employed for up to 20 hours per week during term-time if you are studyng for at least two years or on a course that leads to a qualifiation that woud gain points under the Skilled Migrant Category - degree level or higher. You can work full-time during semester breaks. To do this, you need to apply for a Variation of Conditions, but this can be done at the time of application so long as you ask at hte time. There is no charge for this. However, self-employment is not permitted while you are studying. Is there someone else who could run the business and employ you in it on a part-time basis? Thanks Karen. I have a good idea of a business to study and work together in New Zealand but seems to be not possible as a student. Australia does have a law which says that international students can start their own business but they have to work as a part time for their business. So I was curious about New Zealand if they have similar sort of law.
