    Default What are my chances

    Hi Everyone!

I was just wondering. If I study a Bachelor of Nursing, what are my chances of getting residency as soon as I graduate with or without a job? Also how long would it take roughly to get PR?

Also I have heard (may or may not be a rumor) that you can apply for PR while you are studying and hopefully get granted the visa, but it only seems to work on exceptional cases. Is this true, or is this not even worth venturing in to?

    Much appreciated!

Requirements for applying for Residence (the first visa granted if successful under SMC hasn't been called 'PR' since November of 2010). http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...ant/caniapply/ In addition, nursing is a profession that requires registration, so you would need to check the requirements and qualify for that process, too.

There are no set times for getting any particular visa. Everyone's application is checked out thoroughly, having waited in a managed queue for its turn to be dealt with, and it takes as long as it takes. It's unpredictable because nobody can foresee either, how many other applications may be in the queue with or ahead of you, the working conditions in the office at that time, nor how quickly the people INZ approach to verify your evidence will or won't be with their replies.

I've just written a reply to someone else about not being able to qualify for residence under the SMC while studying. The rule is very clear. http://www.enz.org/forum/showthread....024#post474024 (That's not to say a student who was part of someone else's family, and therefore part of their application as a secondary applicant, couldn't get residence, coincidentally while they were studying. But they couldn't do it as the principal applicant.)

Im stuck in old terminology. Well if I do the degree here, I should get registration assuming I pass everything.

So could you please elaborate. After I graduate what would I need to do first. Apply for a silver ferm visa or apply for Residency?

Silver Fern is only for people from outside NZ.

You need to make friends with the INZ website. You would have various possibilities, I think, assuming graduation, registration, and depending on how quickly you could get a job offer, and we'd need a crystal ball to know exactly what your situation will be, x years down the line, at the end of your course, but these different routes are always there, headlined, for you to check back with to see how much you're in line with the regulations (which, beware, can change from time to time, so keep checking). Have a look at the possibilities of the Graduate Job Search, or the Graduate Work Experience, visas. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...udyandwork.htm (The Graduate JSV can be useful for anyone who doesn't get a job offer immediately.) Then there are WTR and SMC. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...k/workperm.htm And the various temporary work visas. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra.../requirements/

Would I be right in thinking, from something you've posted elsewhere, that, while all this is going on, your parents are still going for Residence? If they get it, will that include you?

That is correct. But I am doubting this more and more. So I am breaking away from my fathers residency app for a loooot of different reasons. So I just wanted to get a good idea of what I would need to look at.

So essentially, it would be best if I got a job then applied for residency under the SMC category after geting a graduate visa?

That's one good possible route. And if you get lucky with a job offer coming through quickly, you may be able to cut out the Graduate JSV step.

I can understand you wanting not to be dependent on someone else. However, presumably you are still currently using your entitlement to a student visa because of his work visa?

The thought that occurs to me is, if you don't HAVE to remove yourself from the family application in order to proceed to doing your degree, it might be best just to let it lie for now. You know that you WILL HAVE independent options at the end of your course, if you need them. But in the meantime, as I mentioned above, it could just happen that the right wheels finally click into place and your father's Residence comes through. You wouldn't be too happy if that occurred, and you'd missed out on the chance of Residence at no extra cost and effort to yourself.

I sent you a PM just because it would be easier to explain in a PM. I am not pulling myself out as such. Explanation in the pm.
