    Default Lake Tekapo

    Hi,

Just booked our first family holiday in ages (been busy with sports etc so last time we got away was Jan 2012!!)

We've got a back in Lake Tekapo, so I need to start thinking about what to do/see?

Guess the Observatory should be on the list, and the hot pools?
Are there any easy mountain biking tracks in the area?

    Any other suggestions?

Definitely the observatory, and the tracks up at Mount Cook Village are really nice, lots of different options depending on how far you want to walk.
The Hermitage (I think that's what it is called) Hotel has a cafe/ restaurant with quite nice food, it is pretty big and not flash at all.., good for a cup of tea/ coffee after having been outside walking.
Can't help with Mountain Biking, though.
If you like Salmon, you should go to one of the Salmon farms in the area and get some very fresh either smoked or raw fish.

When are you going? You'll want to keep an eye on the canal works and what that means for road closures if you go in spring/summer.

You definitely have to visit The Church of the Good Shepherd! It's hard to miss, in the middle of Tekapo on the water front. It's the cutest little church you've ever seen.
It isn't too far to drive to Mount Cook either (over an hour). One you get there, you can park and take a short (or long if you feel like it) walk on one of the walking tracks.
The lake (Lake Pukaki) you drive past on the way is the most beautiful shade of blue too.

Def. visit a salmon farm, they give you free food to feed the fish then buy some fresh or frozen salmon, the most delicious I,ve ever had and reasonably priced too.

Definitely go to Mount Cook and walk to the Tasman Glacier Lake. Easy walk. The visitors centre is worth a visit too.

It's a good run up the hill from the lake to the observatory, where a trail meanders more gently northwards down to the lake and then back south to the town.
