Most of the things (rice, flour, wine, tinned tomatoes) you've listed are cheaper in California but definitely NOT dental work. When my husband needed his wisdom teeth removed, we did the same thing. Compared prices for a few SD dentists and called to a few dentists in Blenheim. The cost of the work in SoCal was the same as taking two weeks off, buying return tickets to NZ, and paying for the dental work. Unfortunately, arranging the consultation visits made it unrealistic because he needed it done pretty quickly. But yeah, a huge difference there.

My findings re cheaper goods/services (compared with the UK):

    Washing machine powder
    Hairdressers
House & car insurance (but travel insurance is ridiculously expensive!)
    Petrol
    TV

I find coffee and muffins at cafes generally cheaper here than in London.

These are the dental costs I was quoted by a dentist in Warkworth:

One hour cleaning with hygienist - NZ $134 = US$107

    A check up, x-rays and cleaning, NZ $138 = US $110

    Check up and cleaning w/o x-rays, NZ $108 = US $86

Root canal with filling - averages about NZ $1000 = US $798

    Porcelain crown - averages NZ $1020 = US $815

Despite most electrical goods seeming to have eye-watering mark-ups, my ice cream maker was almost half-price here vs. the UK: $380 vs. £350 on Amazon UK. It's pretty much the first time in 18 months that I've felt like I've got a bargain. Relatively speaking...

Childcare. In the UK I was paying 206 pounds per week, here I'm paying $337. Also, when my daughter turns 3 she'll receive 20 hours free education funding from the govt; you only get 15 hours in the UK.
